Niosomes, the secret of our formula

Tiny spheres that carry active ingredients deep into the skin: that’s what niosomes are, the heart of our formulations. They protect, deliver, and slowly release ingredients like CBD for greater effectiveness and optimal tolerance.

How do our creams deliver active ingredients to the deeper layers of the skin? The secret might seem inspired by a sci-fi movie: tiny microscopic bubbles that transport active ingredients directly to the right cells. In reality, this technology truly exists and has a name: we’re talking about niosomes.

What are niosomes?

Imagine it as a tiny balloon, with an outer surface that loves water while the inside loves fats. Essentially, it functions as a micro-container that can enclose various active ingredients and transport them through the skin to their destination.

In more technical terms, niosomes are vesicles – small hollow spheres – made of non-ionic surfactants. These molecules self-assemble to form a bilayer membrane, very similar to that of a liposome or even our cells: the hydrophilic heads face outward, in contact with water, while the hydrophobic tails cluster inside. Thanks to this structure, a niosome can trap both water-soluble and fat-soluble substances, such as CBD.

A historical curiosity: niosomes are not a very recent invention. The first niosomes were patented in 1975 by researchers for cosmetic applications. Since then, numerous scientific studies have explored the potential of these microspheres in various fields, from pharmaceuticals to cosmetics, and even food, confirming their unique capabilities. Today, thanks to these advancements, niosomes have become the core of cutting-edge cosmetic formulations like those of Essentialnio.

Many benefits

But, practically speaking, why did we choose to use niosomes in our formulations? We have at least four good reasons to do so!

  1. Targeted and deep delivery. A niosome acts like a nanoscale courier: it transports the active ingredient through the skin barrier and delivers it deeper. The active ingredients penetrate better into the skin, reaching layers where they can truly make a difference. The result? Greater product effectiveness compared to a traditional product that remains more on the surface.
  2. Protects active ingredients. It shields them from external factors until they are released into the skin. The niosome membrane protects them from degradation (light, air, enzymes) during storage and application. For example, CBD encapsulated in niosomes won’t oxidize compared to the same active ingredient exposed directly to air. This results in products with more stable and effective active ingredients over time.
  3. Gradual release. Niosomes can be designed to release their content in a controlled and slow manner. This means that the effect of an ingredient can last longer after application. The skin receives its dose of beneficial ingredients gradually, in a consistent and prolonged way.
  4. Gentleness and safety. Thanks to their biocompatible nature, niosomes are suitable even for sensitive skin. After delivering their beneficial load, the shell biodegrades, much like a capsule that dissolves. In other words, these carriers do their job without leaving traces or causing unwanted effects: only benefits, zero hassles.
